Jade Yehia is an Associate Faculty member at Royal Roads University and an environmental health consultant working at the intersection of climate change, planetary health, and place. A health geographer by training, she spent nearly a decade leading Island Health’s Healthy Built Environment program and has served as Climate Change and Health Lead with regional health authorities and the BC Ministry of Health. Jade has called the South Island home since her teens and believes many of our most powerful responses to climate change are already rooted in land, place, and community. She is a mum, a nature enthusiast, and companion to one very enthusiastic dog.

Climate Action for Planetary Health: from the Local to the Global and Back

Climate change can feel overwhelming in scale as a global problem. But the most transformative moments in this work happen locally, when you reflect deeply in a specific place with your neighbours and co-create something new, or remember something very old. In this workshop, you will create a map of values in place of a shared landscape, making visible what some maps may leave out: Indigenous relationships, the connections between environment and health, and shared community strengths. Then, using a facilitated visioning exercise developed with land-use planning and healthy public policy in mind, you will work together to identify place-based adaptations and what it takes to get there. You will leave with a replicable process you can bring into your own teaching, professional practice, or community planning work.
